Did you know that if you cut your dahlias deeply, it will keep your plants healthier and make them chug out longer, strong stems? If you cut too short, your dahlias will become leggy, and stems will become weak & floppy.
Cut 14”-18” below the bloom, just above a leaf node. Side buds probably won’t bloom, but don’t worry: with good nutrition and hydration your dahlias will make LOTS more blooming stems. You’ll have stronger stems throughout the season, PLUS your plants will be healthier since “deep cutting” stimulates lots of fresh, new growth.
Harvesting dahlias with nice, deep cuts is a form of pinching. It re-directs the dahlia plant’s energy into 2 areas: producing more side-shoots (eventually more flowers) and producing more tubers. Don’t be afraid to cut your dahlias deeply for healthy plants, more blooms, and long strong stems.
